Making room for questions at your next appointment

Keep the things you want to ask in one easy-to-find place.

Making room for questions at your next appointment

Write the question when it occurs to you

Questions often arrive between appointments. Keep a brief list in a place you can find again, then review it before your visit. Use your own words; you do not need the right medical terminology to explain what you want to understand.

Choose what matters most today

Put your most important questions first and say at the start that you have a list. If time is limited, ask how to follow up on the remaining items. Contact your care team sooner for concerns that should not wait for the next scheduled appointment.

Ask for the next step in plain language

If an explanation is unclear, ask for it to be repeated or described differently. You can ask what happens next, who will contact you and when you should expect an update. Record instructions exactly as your clinician gives them rather than reconstructing them later.

Keep practical notes separate

Store travel details, appointment times and childcare arrangements in your planner. Keep sensitive clinical information in a secure place appropriate for health records. ParentCentral is an organisational tool and does not interpret test results or recommend individual care.

Try this, at your own pace.

  • Choose your top questions.
  • Note who to contact for follow-up.
  • Keep practical appointment tasks in the planner.
