NAPLAN: what parents need to know
What the tests cover, when they happen and how to read the report.
What it is
NAPLAN is a national assessment of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is held in March and completed online.
What it is not
NAPLAN is one snapshot of skills on the day. It does not affect school reports or grades, and children do not need special preparation.
Reading the report
Results show four levels of achievement: exceeding, strong, developing and needs additional support. Talk to your child’s teacher about what the result means for them.
Exemptions
Some students, including those with significant disability or who recently arrived in Australia, may be exempt. Talk to your school.
